2013 Environmental Lobby Day is coming up February 19 at United Churches of Olympia. Pre-registration closes Friday, February 15 at 8pm– which means that after Friday, you are still welcome to attend but registration will be $20 instead of $15 for adults, $10 for students.

There’s a lunch option for $12 and bus transportation along the I-5 corridor from Bellingham south for $25.

There is carpooling available from PT, leaving at 6AM and leaving Olympia at 4:30 PM

Sierra Club Film on Toxic Sludge–Feb 12th in Port Townsend

The WA State Chapter of Sierra Club recently started Sludge Free WA, a working group to end the land spreading of toxic municipal and industrial sewage treatment plant wastes in WA and find safe alternatives for reuse of the waste.  Currently, as across the nation, these toxic sludges are sprayed on forest and farm lands and sold to the general public as compost/fertilizer.  These solids from the treatment facilities are "treated" for very few constituents, but not for pharmaceuticals, personal care products, prions, hospital wastes, and many, many other things that are flushed down the toilet or dumped into the mix by industry.

A film and power point presentation on this subject will be given in the evening in Port Townsend on February 12 at the Recreation Center.

In the meantime, a petition to President Obama on the White House site is up.  The aim is to get 1000 signatures by January 25.  We have over 800, so need more to reach the 1000 goal.  Please follow the steps at the end of this message and sign this important petition.

Lisa  Jackson will be replaced by a new EPA administrator.  This is a golden opportunity for us  to use the We The People Whitehouse Petition Web site to request that Obama work with the new EPA Administrator to ban the land application of sewage sludge.

Julia Parrish, Executive Director of COASST, will discuss “Sea of Birds: Population Patterns of Washington’s Coastal Residents and Migrants” at the March 21 Olympic Peninsula Audubon general meeting at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, beginning at 7 pm.

COASST training will be held Saturday, March 24, 10 am – 4 pm at the Feiro Marine Life Center. Please see attached flyer for details.

Free discussion on the Rayonier Mill Site Cleanup tonight

STATE OF THE CLEANUP:  A PUBLIC FORUM ON THE RAYONIER MILL SITE CLEANUP

Dr. Peter deFur will speak on the state of the hazardous waste  cleanup at the Rayonier mill site, Monday, June 15, 7 PM in the  Carver Meeting Room at the Port Angeles library, 2210 South Peadbody Street.

Dr.deFur is  the Technical Consultant to the Olympic Environmental
Council, the local non profit organization funded by the WA State
Department of Ecology to do public outreach and education on the
Rayonier cleanup of contamination.  Dr. deFur has served as their
consultant since 1998.

His presentation will cover where we are in the process of the
cleanup under the WA State Department of Ecology Model Toxics Control
Act,  and the contaminants of concern to public health and the
environment such as dioxins, PCBs and heavy metals relevant to Port
Angeles soils, Port Angeles Harbor sediments, and the mill site. He
will compare this site to others he consults on, such as the Duwamish
River in Seattle.

Dr. deFur  is president of Environmental Stewardship Concepts in
Richmond VA, and an Affiliate Associate Professor and Graduate
Coordinator in the Center for Environmental Studies at Virginia
Commonwealth University, where he conducts research on environmental
health and ecological risk assessment.

He has consulted on several cleanup sites around the nation.  He
served on the National Research Council Board on Environmental
Studies and Toxicology,  on the Virginia State Advisory Board to the
Air Pollution Control Board, on various federal advisory committees,
on numerous scientific reviews of EPA ecological and human health
risk assessments, and on federal advisory committees for EPA’s
Endocrine Disrupter Screening and Testing Program.

The event is free.
