From the Jefferson County Democrats:
You’ve likely heard about the annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, Race to Alaska and SEVENTY48. But other sailing, training and community programs of PT’s Northwest Maritime Center might not be so familiar to you and your family.
Jake Beattie, executive director of the maritime center, will share its story Thursday, July 18, at a public meeting of the Jefferson County Democrats in the Beach Club at Port Ludlow, 121 Marina View Drive. Beattie will discuss the mission and programs of the nonprofit NWMC – and its impact on the community – beginning at 6 p.m., followed by the JCD members meeting.
NWMC programs also include several local and international regattas, adult training in navigation and piloting, maritime skills training for youth in school and summer camps, and even the recycling of fiberglass boats.
Beattie has been professionally connected to the water for more than 20 years in sail training, including instruction for U.S. Sailing and Outward Bound. As a licensed captain, he’s also worked on tugboats delivering heating oil in Chesapeake Bay and on small coastal freighters delivering bait, alcohol, cigarettes and other fishing supplies to remote Alaskan villages.
