Governor candidates fuzzy on state park funding–Everett Herald

This is sort of a misguided headline. The good news is that both candidates are willing to abandon the disastrous approach that the Democrats have put in place for the last two years. This approach has pitted the State Employee Union against the very people they serve, and usually back their demands. The Union recently put out a position paper on Fort Worden that was full of inaccurate information, put forward positions that are totally unacceptable to the hundreds of people who have labored in support of a change to the Park, and ensured that they will have a hard time having any support if the Republicans manage to take power and institute continued, Wisconsin like job cuts.  Hopefully Kevin Van De Wege, and others who put forward the ‘use tax’ on the parks, which was a non starter as a funding mechanism, is willing to change his opinion on this funding mechanism. I also spellchecked the paper’s use of the word conundrum, which they misspelled. (grin)

And another conundrum: When it comes to the state’s cherished park system, the two men vying to be Washington’s next governor are of the same opinion — it needs public funding.  They’re just not sure on how much money to commit. Republican Rob McKenna and Democrat Jay Inslee each said this week their first budget would provide taxpayer dollars to operate and maintain the system, which will celebrate its 100th birthday next year. Jerry Cornfeld reports.
