8/6 Peninsula Daily News —PORT TOWNSEND — Nominations for the Port Townsend Marine Science Center 2009 Eleanor Stopps Environmental Leadership Award are due by 5 p.m. Aug. 31.
The award recognizes North Olympic Peninsula residents who have been leaders in the protection and stewardship of the environment.
Winners and runners-up will be honored at the center’s Stewardship Breakfast at the Fort Worden Commons at 8 a.m. Oct. 1.
The award, created in 2005, recognizes Stopps, 89, of Mats Mats for her successful effort to have Protection Island established as a federal wildlife refuge in 1982.
