Oregon’s efforts to establish a string offishing-free marine reserves off its biologically rich coast surged forward this week, though not without resistance from fishermen and crabbers who worry that expanded reserves will hurt business.
After nearly a year of work, community teams reporting to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife recommended establishing reserves in three spots: Cape Falcon south of Cannon Beach, Cascade Head near Lincoln City and Cape Perpetua near Yachats.

Some of the fishing community here on the Peninsula has been recommending MR’s to the State, but other fishing supporters have been adamant about not reducing fishing at all. Given the crashing of the rockfish population it likely will be forced in the near future via the courts. Many groups believe that ignoring the dire warning signes of population collapse of bottom fish is tantamount to final destruction of our decimated fishing resource.
