New State Restrictions on Makeup of Dishwasher Detergents Take Effect Thursday

Retailers in Washington cannot legally sell detergents with more than 0.5 percent phosphorus.
With little fanfare, new dishwasher detergents — the result of careful research over many years — have arrived on store shelves throughout Washington state and across the country.
Familiar brands are still in place, but many of the formulas for automatic dishwashers have been altered to remove phosphates, which promote plant growth and may degrade water quality in lakes and streams, according to experts.
